Sweet Potato Pie

The history of sweet potato pie can be traced back 300 years. Colonists enjoyed creating sweet dishes using pumpkin until they were introduced to the sweet and silky texture of the sweet potato pie recipes which they loved right away. This pie continues to be a popular dessert in American homes today. It is a traditional side dish that is especially popular in the Southern United States and during Thanksgiving when it is one of the common foods to be found on the tables all across United States together with pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes and turkey.

The main ingredient are the sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are only distantly related to the normal potatoes that we use to make french fries or mashed potatoes. They come from the tropical parts of South America where they were used over 5000 years ago. There are two types of sweet potatoes – the whiter firmer sort and the softer, orange sort. The second ones are also often called yams but can not be mistaken with another vegetable called yam that comes from Africa and Asia. Well – so much about sweet potatoes.
